Geotagging Images for Local SEO: How GPS EXIF Data Really Works

What GPS coordinates embedded in an image do and don't achieve for local search, how to add them correctly per location, and the privacy rule that matters more than any ranking claim.

Geotagging is the image SEO tactic with the widest gap between how it is sold and what it does. Search "geotag images for local SEO" and you will find confident claims that stamping GPS coordinates into your photos will lift you into the local pack. That claim does not hold up, and repeating it does you no favours.

What geotagging actually is: a way of making an image file honestly self-describing about where it depicts. That is a smaller promise, and a defensible one. Here is the state of it as of July 2026, with the evidence for each claim.

What the GPS block contains

EXIF stores location as a small set of related fields, and all of them need to agree for the value to be readable:

  • GPSLatitude and GPSLongitude — the coordinates themselves
  • GPSLatitudeRef and GPSLongitudeRef — hemisphere markers (N/S, E/W)
  • GPSDateStamp and GPSTimeStamp — when the fix was taken
  • GPSVersionID — the tag version

The reference fields matter more than people expect. Latitude 32.7357 without an N is ambiguous — it could be the northern or southern hemisphere. A writer that omits the refs produces coordinates that some readers will parse and others will discard.

The honest ranking assessment

Google's image documentation lists what it uses to understand an image: filename, alt text, surrounding content, captions, structured data. GPS EXIF is not there. Google representatives asked directly about EXIF and ranking have said, consistently, that it is not a ranking factor.

Meanwhile Google's own local ranking guidance names three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Those are driven by your Business Profile, your on-page location signals, citations, reviews and links — not by bytes inside a JPEG.

So if someone promises local pack movement from geotagging photos, they are selling you something the documentation does not support. The broader EXIF picture is the same story: metadata is worth writing, but not because it moves rankings.

The reasons that survive scrutiny

Accuracy and asset management. If you operate in fifteen cities, coordinates are how your image library stays sortable by location. Which photos are the Fort Worth set? The ones with Fort Worth coordinates. This is unglamorous and genuinely useful.

Provenance. Images get scraped, re-shared and re-uploaded. Embedded location and copyright travel with the file even when the page context is stripped away.

Other consumers. Google is not the only system reading files. Asset platforms, some social tools, internal search and emerging provenance frameworks all parse location data.

Consistency with your other signals. If your page says Arlington, your schema says Arlington and your images say Arlington, nothing contradicts anything. Coherence is not a ranking hack — it is just the absence of a mess.

Doing it correctly

Point at the truth

For a physical location, use the real storefront coordinates. For a service-area business without a public address, use the centroid of the area you serve — that is an honest representation of "where this work happens" and it avoids publishing a private residence.

Four decimals is the sweet spot for a business location. Two or three is more honest for a service area. Six is false precision.

Match the coordinates to the image

A photo of your Arlington shop gets Arlington coordinates. A generic studio product shot used site-wide should probably carry none at all, because it does not depict a place. Stamping a location onto an image that has no location is noise, and it undermines the fields that are accurate.

Keep it consistent with everything else

Your coordinates should agree with your Business Profile, your LocalBusiness schema and your NAP. Three different sets of coordinates for the same location across three systems is a data-quality problem regardless of what search engines do with it.

Getting the coordinates right in the first place

Most bad geotags are bad because of how the number was obtained, not how it was written.

From Google Maps. Right-click the exact spot and the coordinates appear at the top of the context menu in decimal degrees — the format you want. Do not use the address search result blindly: for large buildings and business parks it frequently returns the centroid of a parcel or the nearest road node rather than your unit.

From your Business Profile. If your listing already has a verified pin, use that. Consistency with the profile matters more than a few metres of accuracy.

For a service area. Take the rough centre of the area you actually serve. If you cover three adjacent suburbs, one point between them is honest; three separate precise pins implying three premises are not.

Format matters. EXIF stores latitude and longitude as degrees/minutes/seconds internally, but every sane tool accepts decimal degrees and converts. Watch the sign convention: western longitudes are negative in decimal (-97.1081), and dropping that minus sign relocates Fort Worth to central China. This is the single most common geotag error and it is completely silent.

Verify after writing. Read the coordinates back out of the published file and paste them into a map:

The privacy rule that outranks every SEO consideration

This is the part that deserves to be non-negotiable.

Phones embed GPS by default. A technician photographing completed work at a customer's house creates a file containing that customer's home coordinates. Upload it to a gallery and you have published a private address to anyone who downloads the image. The same applies to photos taken at staff homes, at schools, or anywhere an identifiable private individual is involved.

Two defaults handle it:

  1. Strip location from field-captured and user-submitted photos. Automatically, in the pipeline, not by remembering.
  2. Add coordinates deliberately, for published locations only.

Where it gets hard: many locations

For one location this is a one-time setting. The difficulty is entirely a volume problem.

What to do instead, if local rankings are the goal

Since geotagging will not move the local pack, it is worth naming what does — so the effort lands somewhere useful.

The Business Profile is the engine. Categories, service areas, hours, attributes and the primary category in particular. A wrong primary category outweighs anything you will ever do to an image file.

Location pages with genuine local content. Not a city-swapped template. Actual service specifics, actual local references, actual differences between the Arlington page and the Plano one. This is where photographs of real work in real places do help — not through their EXIF, but by being distinctive content that a templated competitor cannot match.

Reviews, consistently. Volume, recency and responses. Boring, unglamorous, and the strongest lever most local businesses are not pulling.

Consistent NAP across citations. Name, address, phone identical everywhere. This is the discipline geotagging feels like it belongs to, and it is where the equivalent effort actually pays.

On-page location signals. LocalBusiness schema, address in the markup, embedded map where appropriate, city in titles and headings where honest.

Images support all of that as content — a real photo of your real premises on your real location page is worth having. The coordinates inside the file are a bookkeeping detail on top of it, not the mechanism.

The summary worth keeping

Geotag your images because it is accurate, because it keeps a multi-location library organised, and because provenance travels with the file. Do not geotag them expecting to appear in the local pack — that work is done by your Business Profile, your reviews and your pages.

And whatever else you do, strip GPS from photos taken at other people's homes. That single rule is worth more than every ranking claim in this category.

Frequently asked questions

Does geotagging photos help you rank in Google Maps?+

There is no documented evidence that GPS coordinates embedded in an image file influence local pack or Google Maps rankings, and Google representatives have said EXIF is not used for ranking. Real local ranking factors are proximity, relevance and prominence — your Business Profile, citations, reviews and on-page location signals. Treat geotagging as file hygiene and asset organisation, not as a Maps tactic.

Then why geotag images at all?+

Because coordinates make an image self-describing about where it was taken, which is useful for asset management across multiple locations, for provenance when the file travels, and for platforms and internal systems that do read location data. Where should the coordinates point?+

At the real place the image depicts. Your storefront for exterior shots, the service area you are illustrating for a city page, the actual job site if you have permission to publish it. Pointing every image at a competitor's address or at a city centre you have no presence in is fabrication, and it fools nobody worth fooling.

Is geotagging images spammy?+

Adding true coordinates to your own images is not. Mass-generating hundreds of near-identical images each stamped with a different city to simulate a local presence is a doorway-page tactic in image form, and it carries the same risk as any other attempt to fake locality.

What is the privacy risk?+

It is the biggest practical issue with GPS EXIF. A phone photo taken at a customer's home embeds that home's coordinates, and publishing it publishes their address. Strip location from field-captured and user-submitted photos as a default, and add coordinates only for places you have decided to publish.

How precise should the coordinates be?+

Four to five decimal places is plenty — that is metre-level. More precision implies a certainty you probably do not have and, for anything near a private address, is worse rather than better. For a service-area business, the centroid of the area you serve is more honest than a fake street address.
